ENCEBRAS DISTRICT

District Mayor José Albert Rico

Surrounded by mountains, Les Enzebres is an obligatory passage for campers who go up to the Tres Fuentes Nature Classroom every weekend. It is located 5.7 km from Pinoso at an altitude of 705 m above sea level. in the eastern part of the municipality. Regarding the population, although it is concentrated in a small urban area, it has some hamlets scattered in its surroundings with names such as Casas de Sierra, Cuevas, Casas de Bajo, Purgateros, Casa de Miracielos, Casas de Sonca, etc. In the 1930s, about 300 inhabitants lived in Les Enzebres, and in 1970 there were 161. Currently, there are fewer than a hundred residents, although the number quadruples on weekends.

There are signs of human presence in this enclave in the area known as El Castillarejo, where findings from the Eneolithic and Bronze Age have been made. Another area of archaeological interest is in Los Purgateros, where remains from the Islamic world have been found. The district is crossed by the GR-7 long-distance trail, so it has received visits from many hikers in recent times.

The tranquility of these lands was chosen to establish a convent of the Carmelite Sisters of Orihuela in the district in 1916, on the initiative of Matilde Mira, wife of a teacher who worked at the district school. In recent years, due to a lack of vocations, the congregation considered closing the convent, but this did not happen, as the auxiliary facilities have now become a hostel and the Monte Carmelo spirituality house, which hosts groups of young people or individuals who choose the enclave to meditate and rest.

Around the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, during the closest weekend (late May to early June), the residents of the district organize festivities that have always attracted many visitors. Until a few years ago, the release of heifers through the streets was the best attraction for people to visit Les Enzebres, but security measures have led to the disappearance of this almost sporting activity from the festival programs of our districts. Nevertheless, other events maintain interest in the celebration.

Traveling from Pinoso to Les Enzebres, upon reaching the area of Casas de Sonca, one can rest and observe an old 19th-century sundial, which features typically Baroque decoration. The reason for this is easy to explain Although academies sought to impose the new styles prevailing in the rest of Europe, the popular classes remained attached to the decorative forms of their ancestors for many years.
