The official coat of arms og pinoso is based on a painting by Federico Tormo Monzó, a navie of Pinoso, who depicted it on canvas (65 x 85 cm) and donated it to the Town Council in 1923

The painting is housed in the Council Chamber of Pinoso Town Council. It was restored in 2008 by the Restoration Workshop of the Provincial Council of Alicante.

Its roots are in the earth, but its crown reaches towards the sky

Coat of Arms and Heraldry

The coat of arms is diamond-shaped and contains elements that represent Pinoso, its surroundings and its economy. The field of the coat of arms is divided into four sections.

The first element, located at the top of the coat of arms, is the Senyera of the Kingdom of Valencia.

Beneath the Senyera there is a double compartment containing two sparrows, symbolising the tribute once paid to the lord, and a wine barrel, referring to the flourishing economy of the people of Pinoso at that time; between them is a heraldic shield.

The largest section of the coat of arms features three pine trees on a blue field, with a miner depicted directly below. Both sections refer to Mount Cabezo and its salt mines.

A ducal crown appears above the coat of arms, in reference to the historical link between these lands and the Duchy of Híjar.

Encircling the whole composition, a border bears the Latin motto: Radices terram versus poculum autem in caelum. MDCCCXXVI. This motto means: “Its roots are in the earth, but its crown reaches towards the sky”, referring to the vitality of the people of Pinoso, who do not forget their origins.

Wine, salt, marble and maravedís

Flag

The official flag of Pinoso was conceived between the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Its design was commissioned from naval engineer Luis López Palancar, a keen researcher of heraldry and institutional symbols.

When the flag of Pinoso was designed in 1996, it sought to reflect the town’s natural resources (wine, salt and marble), as well as the price it had to pay for its separation from Monóvar (7,500 maravedís per person). This resulted in a flag of dark red, white and gold, arranged in horizontal stripes, with the town’s coat of arms placed in the centre of the red stripe.

It was not until Villazgo Day in 1997 that the arrangement of colours and their meaning were made public. In 2003, following approval by the Plenary of Pinoso Town Council, the flag was officially raised at the Town Hall.

Since then, it has been flown on municipal buildings such as the Theatre-Auditorium and the Wine House.

Meaning of the flag colors:

Red

The dark red color symbolises the wine produced by Pinoso’s vineyards

White

The white represents the importance of the salt extracted from Mount Cabezo and the cream-coloured marble (crema marfil) from the quarries of Monte Coto.

Gold

The gold symbolises the high cost borne by the people of Pinoso in obtaining the privilege of villazgo in 1826.

Anthem Lyrics

Although the anthem had lyrics from the time its melody was composed (dedicated to the town band), the official version since 2010 is the one written by the local poet Maxi Banegas.

Long live Pinoso and its band

Anthem

The composition that is now the official anthem of Pinoso dates back to 1900, when the priest José García Pérez (Pinoso, 1875 – Monforte del Cid, 1936) composed the march “Viva Pinoso y su banda”. It was adopted as the anthem of the Sociedad “Unión Lírica Pinosense” until, in 2000, it was transferred to Pinoso Town Council.

You can listen to the Pinoso anthem, recorded in 2010 by the band of the Sociedad “Unión Lírica Pinosense” and the Parish Choir “San Pedro Apóstol”.

Lyrics of the anthem of Pinoso

Beloved Pinoso,
in your calmness
the soul is stirred,
and it is for your love.

The name is a prayer,
resounding up to heaven,
and the lips pronounce it
with great devotion.

The sea of those vineyards
of vines that “bleed”,
the light bestowed by the sky
and the gold of your sun.

The great olive trees
that fill the fields,
the ripening wheat
and the blossoming trees.

Up to our Cabezo,
the hours gently unfold,
a magical clock
that from the tower
presides over Pinoso.

And on top of that mountain,
wrested by human hands,
crystalline salt is
the most precious treasure.

With effort and perseverance
and covered in glory,
we shall make your history
through our great ambition.
And the fervour and enthusiasm
of this noble task
will lend beauty
to so high and noble a mission.

Proud mountain of El Coto,
which together with the marble from the quarry
will mark the new era
of progress and expansion.

In absence, the people of Pinoso,
full of love and longing,
never cast aside the hope
of returning to your warmth.

Long live the most beautiful mother,
like a great and shining star,
she encourages us in our work
and offers us protection.

Under the sweetest gaze
that has ever existed in our land,
