LEL DISTRICT

District Mayor Perfecto Rico Cerdá

The case of this district is quite particular. It is a very scattered hamlet with numerous houses spread throughout the area. Located at an altitude of 470 m, it is nearly 6 km from the municipal capital.

If we travel through the territory covered by the district, among terraces and pine forests, we will find hamlets with names such as Lel (which gives it its name), Venta de Llobregat, Casa de Albatera, Casa de Corralo, Casa de Riquens, Casa de Dimas, Casas de Ruta, etc.

Perhaps it is the one that hides the most history within its depths. Numerous archaeological vestiges of the passage of ancient civilizations through our lands have been found.. Thus, in the Cueva de las Arenas, in the hamlet of Lel itself, or in the Sierra de la Centenera, there are remains from the Eneolithic and Bronze Age.. In Las Camarillas, the remains are from the Iberian and Roman world, and in the Vereda de los Cabecicos, we find Roman communication routes, which also have sections in the Sierra de la Centenera, where we will also find examples of petroglyphs. All this is near abandoned quarries from which stone was extracted to build buildings in the town. Perhaps some of the few remaining stone facades were made using material taken from them.. There are still ashlar blocks left half-cut or broken before they could be taken away.

Except for the summer and the harvest seasons for grapes and almonds, most of the houses that make it up remain deserted throughout the year. In 1970, 88 inhabitants lived in Lel, a figure that now seems very distant. To encourage its residents to come closer to their homes, a festival has been held upon the arrival of summer since 1996. At first, the festivities were held in honor of an image of Saint Joseph that a neighbor had, but now a patron saint has been chosen, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, commemorated in a single, albeit very intense, day. The image was blessed in 1999.

Since 1998, the residents have had a social venue where they can meet and carry out activities.
It is on the esplanade of this building where the festivities take place.
Progressive advancements are arriving, which has meant that residents have water, electricity, good roads, and other amenities that facilitate life in the countryside.

Some older residents recount that, at the end of the Civil War, the Falangists held a party in Lel to celebrate their triumph in the military confrontation, during which the leading figures of the town were present. Those were other times. Now the celebration is more recreational.

In the main hamlet, until recently, one of the houses proudly displayed a coat of arms on its facade, but remodeling work caused a fragment of this piece of historical interest to fall, which may be the only one of its kind in the municipality.
